1) Does CoE have any advice for TS on how they could improve the success rate
of their proposals?
Reply:
2) There are still secrets in many of the older areas of Realms. Sometimes
an immortal will give a hint to mortals by auctioning an item or by other
means. Would CoE be minded to give the readers of the Cry of Despair a hint
to uncovering a secret of an old area which is known by no or extremely few
mortals?

3) Mortals occassionally find ways to exploit a bug to gain gold or
equipment. The temptation to not report the bug can overcome some mortals.
Conversely, some mortals will report the bug immediately. Could CoE tell the
readers of the Cry of Despair of a time when such a bug was reported by a
mortal and also of a time when the mortal decided to exploit the bug.
What was the bug and what were the consequences?
Reply:
Note: Questions are from a variety of sources. If you would like to ask CoE
a question, then you can either mudmail it to Fiebin, Falennt or Linda, or
alternatively send Fiebin a tell.

I slowly opened my eyes and tried to figure out where I was. This
seemed to be something that was becoming a common occurrence. The bed I was
lying in was soft. The room was warm. The ceiling was an off white, well more
brown really. Suddenly my stomach began to rumble. "That is what woke me
up," I decided. I sat up and took a look at the rest of the room. The walls
were the same tan color as the ceiling and the floor was the same bleached
and worn wood that I have discovered to be the norm for inns all over the
world. The wash basin was filled with clean, fresh water. I walked over and
washed my face and tried to recall what happened the previous day.
That was easy enough. I met Charity and she had healed me. She had
also set me up in this inn. I couldnt understand why she had done that. I
vowed to find out. I saw the fruit from the night before still sitting on
the night stand. I took a slice of apple and absently ate it. Charity said
she would meet me here this morning. Would she come to my room or was I to
meet her in the common area?
I looked around for my clothes and quickly got dressed. I was going
to need new clothes it seemed. These were all torn and covered with blood.
Grabbing the last of the food off the plate, I headed out to the common room.

I saw Charity sitting at a table with four other people. One
resembled Charity in appearance, one was human, one was elf, and the other..
the other was dwarf. I am not sure how I knew this. Everything before
yesterday was still a blank, but apparently I still retained some knowledge
from my former life. Just then Charity looked up and saw me.
She beckoned me over and introduced me to her companions. Indicating
the one that looked like her, "This is Cari." Then pointing to the human,
"This is Vandon." And these two are Jayme and Odo. They are rarely apart."
She grinned affectionately at the other two.
"Nice to meet you," I stammered.
"So this is the little dwarf?" chuckled Vandon.
Jayme reached over and punched him in the arm. "Be nice! Cant you
tell she is confused? Meeting the leader of Dragonslayer would be lost on
her in this state."
Placing his arm around Jayme, Odo asked, "How did you come to our
fair city?"
I sighed deeply and looked to Charity for help. "I can tell you what
I know. I know my name is Linda...I think." I looked around at everyone and
quickly continued, "I know those that were with me are now dead. And I know
a friend brought me to this city because there were others like me here."
Cari pushed out a chair. "Have a seat. You said a friend brought you
here. What was this friends name?"

Sheepishly I whispered, "I dont know. He was a very large silver
wolf. In my mind I think of him as Silverwolf. I want to find out who he
is...was."
Jayme patted my arm, "Do you have any idea why you were there or
where you were going?"
The innkeeper chose that moment to bring me a mug of water. "Did you
wish anything for breakfast?"
I thought for a moment before saying, "May I have some fruit and
cheese, please?" He nodded and walked back toward the counter.
I quietly and quickly told the others what had happened to me the
previous day. They all listened patiently while sending curious glances
to Charity.
"So nothing has returned? No memory of your past or your companions?"
Charity sighed acceptingly. "I was hoping this would change." Looking to
Jayme and Odo, "I dont suppose you two have any knowledge of her...um...
friend?"
Jayme and Odo each shook their head slowly. "I will inquire with our
leaders and see if anyone has reported to them about one such as this," Odo
stated calmly.
"And I will speak with other members of the guild," declared Jayme.
"Cari and I can ask around the order if you wish," said Vandon.
Charity nodded, "Very well. That is about all we may do at this time.
I promise you, Linda, if we can find anything out, we will do so. May I ask
what your intentions are now?"

Thinking a moment before answering, "I guess I will learn anything
that will help me find Silverwolf. May I ask why you deferred to Jayme and
Odo a few moments ago?"
"Her main reasons are because we are rangers. We deal with animals
and nature," replied Odo gently.
Jayme added, "If you really want to learn our ways, may I suggest
starting at the Academy?"

/ Nasr vs Invictus - Vache \__________________________________________________
|_____________________________________________________________________________\
Weapons of the two-handed style seem to be abundant around Realms as of
late. From the staple, Nasr, to the more interesting/recent addition of
Invictus. I'm sure each has its pros and cons (like -hr), but i will compare
the Nasr and Invictus for now.
Object 'Nasr, Claymore of Sovereignty' is infused with your magic...
It is a level 46 slashing weapon, weight 35.
Locations it can be worn: wield
Special properties: glow loyal two-handed magic bless metal
Genres allowed: fighter
This weapon has a gold value of 1000000.
Damage is 3 to 75 (average 39).
Affects damage roll by 15.
Affects hit roll by -2.
Affects hp by 190.
Affects strength by 1.
Affects wisdom by 2.
Casts spell 'cause serious'
The min. damage of 3 and -hr aren't great, but for the money, it's the best
bet for a cheap two-hander.

Now for the part i'll get some 'grief' for writing about...
Object 'Invictus' is infused with your magic...
It is a level 50 crushing weapon, weight 1.
Locations it can be worn: wield
Special properties: two-handed magic bless
Classes allowed: Paladin
Alignments allowed: good
This weapon has a gold value of 30000.
Damage is 18 to 54 (average 36).
Affects mana by 75.
Affects damage roll by 15.
Affects hp by 180.
Affects resistant:unholy by 10%.
Affects strength by 1.
Casts spell 'dispel evil'
A lower average damage than the Nasr but the min. damage of 18 makes up for it.
Of course it seems to work best against evil mobs (it is dispel evil after all).
For a character with the same damage roll, etc, the Invictus seems to do on
average 10-20 hp more damage a hit then nasr does. Paladin's have an adept %
of 95 for bludgeons and so the Invictus is perfect for them. The Invictus
does lack the + wisdom from the Nasr but a Paladin wielding the Invictus won't
be able to shieldbash anyways :).

There are of course other two-handed weapons on realms, some even for
lowbies. I am not going to bother to list them, theya re OK, but in
comparison to nasr/invictus, they fail horribly.
It is interesting to note the recent influx of two-handed weapons though,
a somewhat interesting twist to the stagnant pool of rod eq. Now what is
needed, in this severely jaded clerics opinion, is what was promised ages
ago, cleric sects/paths. Now that would make things interesting! (and
possibly make clerics useful? :P) Sure they can brew sanc/grounding
but their heal brewing was made useless thanks to violets dropping in
price and weight. Maybe if old necro came back, or divinity was brewable
they'd have something worth doing once more....Ah Pipe Dreams....

|_____________________________________________________________________________\
Major Oak - A tricksy little area by Stoneheft, that took me the most amount
of time to find. As with all these trade route areas, not all that big, but
unlike the rest, it's connected to a variety of areas. Stoneheft cites his
motivation for building this area as two fold, one, because there were no
organized groups of thieves preying on the traffic on trade routes, and two,
he likes adding areas that tie in a few areas together, giving players more
choice in going from A to B. (Look out for the Sewer entrance!).
In the long run, we may be getting additions to the theme of Major Oak, or
in his words, "it might inspire a need for me to build something over ETR, NTR
or even High Road through SMR.'". He admits that "Major Oak is in no way
outstanding", it will not be a source of "This is a great piece of EQ!", but
he does advise that oldbies with groups of friends should run a group of
characters level 10-20 would enjoy going through the area. Given the depth
of quests in SMR, don't be surprised if Major Oak turns out to have a few
twists and turns in it either.
New Hope Farm - I've not been able to get in touch with Shadrack, but the area
itself... It's fairly empty, a handful of chickens run around in the field
and the owners of the farm rest in their hut behind the gates in Bartok.
A freshly dug grave in the east of the fields perks curiosity, and the tax
collector and clerk give an interesting storyline about taxation from Bartok
for the land.

Ezard's Fields - A small stand alone farm on the Western Trade Route, probably
the largest of the newest areas in game, and certainly the most quest filled
one I've found so far (albeit my exploration of Major Oak has been lacking
in depth as of yet), as you would expect from an Akael area really, as you
would expect, after Temple of the Moon. A bunch of fun little things for
lowbies to do, to add a few new ways to gain experience or gold. The equipment
that can be gained from this area is pretty decent for the level range, as
well, including some handy +con low level ears. She wants to warn the readers
to not be so hasty in slaughtering everything, every family member in the area
has a quest. She concluded our little chat declaring her love for the little
boy's blocks. Happy exploring, it's definitely worth a look.
White Pine Camp - I explored this place before I did all the others, and
ID'd all the mobs as I went, etc. From discussions with Destre, it is a prelude
to a larger storyline that she is developing, and I'm excited to see what
evolves out of this. For those who do not know, White Pine Camp was founded
by people unsettled with Darkhaven, and Duke Luther is not very pleased about
this. They are charged a tax to bring their goods into Darkhaven to sell, and
the camp itself is quite minimial at the moment. The pies, from my
understanding, have come with rave reviews from some. I hope to see Destre's
expansions on this storyline come into game soon, perhaps with quests on Duke
Luther.

Righteous stand - what a great skill! It's a bit frustrating with the wear off
timer, but in fairness, if it wasn't for the wearoff timer, it'd be far too
powerful.
Orderable Barbs - A great addition, especially since there are due sacrifices
you must make to join an order as a barbarian (kind of oxymoronic, don't you
think?). However, I was a little concerned about the inability to make barb-eq
outside of the tribe, but this isn't a big deal for very much except Yeti
gauntlets.
Deathsphere - Just another elemental shield. This change will not make nephs
or evil clerics any more desireable to run on (people soak up acidmist quite
frequently nowadays no complaint).
Dorn nadur - Whilst I do not play a druid, all the feedback I've had on it so
far is very good, and it seems it's long been desired.
Gauge - I don't want to be rude here, but it seems a little pointless. It's
really lagged for something that has little, honestly, functional use.
Harvest - this is a great idea, it makes nephs much easier to use.
Mudsigned notes! I love this change. It saves me a lot of hassle, and I'm
really glad it's been brought in.

**Written in a slightly scrawled script, the lettering flowing a little more
evenly across the page.**
Somehow I managed to talk them into giving me a candle to see by, they said I
would only be allowed one a week so I will try to write as quickly as I can so
that there is some sort of record of my life here. Life, can you even call it
that? Today I plan on making my escape, at least I can only assume it will be
during the day. I have chosen the time when this place seems the most quiet,
and I have no guard. I often wonder why they leave me without the guard during
this time, maybe there is some horrible death awaiting me if I leave. At the
moment I do not care, all I care about is the possibility of freedom.
**Here the lettering starts to slant a little more, and the script a little
more unreadable**
I had to put my candle out, I do not want to waste it as I will be taking it
with me when I make my escape.

There are times when one of them will peer into my cell, and shivers
run through my body. I think he is truly evil, for he is one of the only
ones who causes this reaction. Almost as if he drains what little warmth
I have in this small cell away. It is a sharp contrast to the atmosphere
when my favorite guard is here, at least he will sit and talk with me to
pass the hours. Now that I think of him, I have not seen him in almost
a week now. I wonder what has happened to him.
I think they have gone to sleep now, or whatever it is they usually do
about this time. I am straining my ears but I hear nothing, so I think
it is safe. I will leave and make my move now, perhaps the next time
I write it will be from the safety of my home.

Get married with us!
Are you getting married and still looking for that perfect location?
Well look no more for we can provide just that! We'd be happy to host your
special day in our blissful chapel! Need to know how it looks? Here it is:
A Blissful Chapel
Mmm! The lavish scents of dehydrated roses and lavender permeate this
chapel with a blissful fragrance. Golden pews are lined perfectly to
the left and right, reflecting the sun and all the colours it produces
through a stained glass ceiling. Framed prayer scrolls are neatly placed
on the brassy walls, and between each is a glass case containing various
trinkets of love, beauty, and devotion. A casual array of freshly-cut
flowers sits comfortably upon a large altar of stone, engraved with words
of wisdom and joy.
Our own Haviland would be happy to officiate but you can of course
choose a person to your own liking to preside over your ceremony!
Feel free to send a tell to any of the leaders if you have any further

Sheelala joins with Olympics
Working in collaboration with some of the other nations, including the Pixies,
the Hobbits, and the Half-Ogres, a Pre-Olympic Gala is being organized. Thus,
all Elves are encouraged to bring their Sheelala festivities, stories, dances,
foods, and merriment to this Gala. Tari Annale has arranged for most of the
festivities already planned for Sheelala to be transported to the location of
the Gala. A date for the Gala has yet to be set, but it will surely be a

From the Opallinoc News Bureau -
Dateline Darkhaven: Olympics coming soon
Duke Luther has announced that the Nations Olympics are starting soon.
Watch for further information on Nations related note boards.
Dateline Barren Peaks: Lost Castle
An expedition, financed by the Uruk'hai, has been sent into the vast Barren
Peaks. Led by Volstagg, the catacomb dweller, the expedition is searching for
the fabled Lost Castle. For some this had been no more than a bedtime story.
For others, a life long quest for vast wealth beyond dreams. The Uruk'hai
leaders now believe there is some truth to the ancient lore of the Lost Castle.
Certain artifacts and remnants of tattered scrolls have newly come to light.
Further study is being done by Uruk'hai scholars. Rewards are being offered for
items of a pertinent nature that refer to the Lost Castle.
Dateline Southern Mountain Range: Artifacts found
An ominous artifact has been found hidden in the forests of the Southern
Mountain Range. It is a strangely constructed arrow with unknown plumage
at one end and a sharpened skull-like tip at the other. Nothing has yet come
to light as to what peoples the arrow is from. Testing has shown that it is
not even well made for an arrow. It is poorly weighted and not balanced.
Anyone with more information on this arrow is asked to contact the Uruk'hai
expedition leader, Volstagg. Monetary rewards are offered.

A Cry in the (Under)Dark
"Silence, you say? It's always quiet down here...well except for that one time
when the driders tried to revolt. Funny...those things are always revolting in
some form or fashion, you know? Part drow, part spider. Not even worthy of our
blood. But anyways, back to what I was saying, yeah...Valsharess has ordered us
to silence our communications with the other nations for now. No idea why...not
like the guards have been bustling about with nothing. Maybe she's just getting
paranoid. Ehh, then again...Valsharess, chosen by Lloth herself. But it really
doesn't change that much. We only ever really interact with one another."

been approved by Destre and Siporta. It is currently being built. Leaders of
Orders are reminded to oversee their Order's duty to hand in IOQ quests on
time. The goal is for IOQs to be ran monthly.
Ascendere is scheduled to host the forthcoming IOQ.
Dragonslayers should hand in their quest by the 14th of June to Destre and
Siporta.
MaidenStone should begin to formulate ideas for their IOQ and have their quest
concept approved by Destre and Siporta by the end of June.

/ Quest News - May CoD Quest Results \________________________________________
|_____________________________________________________________________________\
The May CoD Quest was to design a flower item for Realms. The Council of Elders
have generously allowed the winning flower to be added somewhere in the Realm
(Subject to item approval).
The CoD received several excellent entries. Linda and Falennt both selected
Tania's submission as the winning flower! Below is her entry:
This flower is based on a real flower, called the 'Liatris spicata', or
'prairie gay feather' or 'dense blazing star'
Name of the item: The prairie gay feather
Long description: A dense blazing star stands here defying the weather elements.
Description: When you look at this purple flower, you see how fluffy the seeds
are. You are afraid that if you touch this flower, the seeds will fall off.
Keywords: prairie feather purple (not: blazing or star or flower)
Misc:
When you drop the flower, something special should happen:
As you drop the flower, fluffy seeds appear in the air.
Gesundheit! (the social sneeze)
More or less the same should happen when you hold the item:
As you hold the prairie gay feather tight, fluffy seeds appear in the air.
Gesundheit! (the social sneeze)
Falennt will contact the Winner to award you with your glory prize.

The May IGQ was hosted by GoC, designed by Indira and built by Destre. Great
job and thanks for hosting and making it!!
The storyline was that an evil pixie, called Lakarion, had stolen sunlight
or was generally commiting some nefarious act. The questers had to restore the
balance by collecting 6 pieces of Sunray from various Goddesses.
Mechanically, the quest involved deciphering an encrypted word, finding a pixie
which needed an in game item, then returning with the item to get the clue as
to the location of the Goddess which had a piece of sunray.

/ Quest News - Slug Infestation - Fiebin \____________________________________
|_____________________________________________________________________________\
Gonnil hosted the slug investation quest near the end of May. Gonnil gave
everyone advanced notice of the quest through a note on Archives. The advanced
notice is definitely appreciated. First, it likely increases the competition.
Secondly, mortals can log on specifically to participate in the event. No time
wasted from idling. Finally, those in quieter timezones definitely see
far fewer quests than their counterparts in busier timezones and the advanced
notice enables them to log on for the special event.
The quest lasted for 1 hour. The concept is identical to that of the bettle
bashing game. Instead of bashing bettles, you bashed up slugs. There were 4
rounds of approximately equal duration. King's Castle was the arena. King's
Castle was an excellent choice. It wasn't an overly enormous area, nor was it
too small, and there were definitely parts of the area which were less
frequented.
The reactions of the mobs also added a very interesting element to the quest.
The guards and most of the other mobs often joined in fights against the
quester, especially if they were evil aligned. The guards and some of the
other mobs also disarmed, and the maidservants would pick up disarmed weapons.
Fitzgerald even threw weapons out the room. This definitely added an element
of risk, especially for those using good weapons. I had my DFB disarmed by
Fitz and I immediately feared that someone would pick up the weapon and
claim it as their own.

/ Quest News - Slug Infestation - Fiebin \____________________________________
|_____________________________________________________________________________\
Luckily no such incident occured, though I would think that Gonnil would
rectify any such undesirable conduct. I did hear one of the pkers yell that
they had lost their weapon during the quest. Fortunately, it turned out
that a maidservant had them.
There were 4 different types of slugs and each killing blow made on the slug
earned the kber the associated points. Small slugs were worth 2 points.
Medium slugs - 5 points. Large slugs - 15 points. Queen slugs - 50 points.
Each quester's score was also automatically recorded and that meant that they
could quit to stop a guard from pursuing them for example. Kill stealing was
also allowed and this meant that strategy played a very important role in
the quest.
Melee damage was by far the most reliable source of damage. This meant that
those of the fighter genre, vampires and rogue genre had an advantage over
the other classes. Further, warriors and barbarians were able to stun slugs
and classes with big alpha attacks (fathomers/thieves) were able to time that
attack so as to increase their chances of making the killing blow.
In either round 3 or 4 there were packs of queen slugs on steroids. They managed
to kill some questers as they were able to cast execrate and abolition and there
were 3 of them in a room.

/ Quest News - Magic Numbers - Fiebin \_______________________________________
|_____________________________________________________________________________\
Destre hosted a quest near the end of May about Magic Numbers. The first part
of the quest was to collect numbers and mathematic signs (add, subtract, divide,
multiply) which were randomly dispersed around realms. The second part of the
quest was to use the numbers and mathematic signs to make an equation with a
solution that was equal to the 'magic numbers'. Destre had listed a short list
of around 7 different numbers which were designated magic numbers. Each
quester was allowed to submit 2 equations and glory was given according to the
complexity of the equation. For example, the magic number of 999 could be
made by:
1) Finding the number 9 three times.
2) Finding the number 7, 2, 6, 3, 8 and 1. As well as three addition signs.
(7+2)= 9. (6+3)= 9. (8+1)= 9.
3) Many other ways.
Questers were allowed to trade numbers and signs with each other. It was
a fun quest which definitely left me very confused during the 2nd part. I was
constantly trying to find the best combination of equations whilst trying to
trade numbers and signs which I thought I needed. Luckily I had some friends
who helped me do the 2nd part, though I would advise against asking too many
different people as it will leave you even more confused...

The Room of Bone
Following the marble steps upwards into the tower you enter into a
large room filled with the bones of the dead. Human, elven, draconian
and numerous others you are unable to identify. It is as if the remains
of every deceased individual have been brought here and kept in storage.
There is a strange order to this insanity as the bones are stacked so that
the smallest are at the front of the room with the immense remains of
dragons and other gigantic beasts are piled to the rear of the chamber.
Small paths lead through the bones in the four cardinal directions ending
in dark arch-ways that exit this room.
