For those of you that have known me over the past seven
years, you also know that it is not often that I am left
speechless. When Khaimran first approached me regarding
the future of the CoD, I was immediately excited and
anxious. I joined the staff months ago on a whim after
someone recommended sharing my advice with others.
Ilsensine immediately became my partner in crime and we
have yet to stop and look back. Suddenly, I find myself
alone and in the spotlight with nothing to say.
I have gained a great respect in the last few days for
past editors of the paper. It certainly is no easy task.
However, I have a great staff and the support of two
fabulous immortals. It can only get better from here.
I sincerely hope that you all enjoy my inaugural edition
of the Cry of Despair.

Kador - by Amoria Interviews
----------------------------------------------------------------

After a four-year break from immhood, Kador has recently
rejoined the ranks of the Gods with a smile and an urge
to continue contributing to the fun and sportsmanship of
countless people seeking to have a good time on Realms of
Despair.
Since becoming an active player on RoD in 1996, Kador has
seen many people come and go and many changes to the game.
Among his least favorite of those changes, the Dwarven
warrior admits he has a certain dislike for styles, but
believes the best change for Realms was the inception of
glory.
Kador says he comes to the Realms to escape the daily
grind of baking and cooking for a living. I managed to
catch him between his new immortal role and building
efforts, and tie him down long enough to ask a few
questions.

----------------------------------------------------------------

A: When did you start mudding?
K: I started seriously mudding on October 17th 1996,
   my birthday. ;)

A: What got you started and kept you hooked?
K: It was pretty unusual, I was flipping through the net
with my brand new netscape 3.0 and came across this
page that had a link to Realms of Despair, naturally I
clicked it and walked into my second home.

A: When did you first imm?
K: I first immed after I had joined Inconnu way back in
June 1997, Myra talked me into it.

   immortal?
K: Terrorizing newb...err yer gonna print this right?
*mutter* Actually its always been making this a fun
   game for everyone :)

A: What makes it fun?
K: Why my Elvis Impersonation of course.
   Kador swivels his hips.
   Hail to the King baby!

A: What would you say is your most valuable contribution
to the Realms as either a mortal or immortal? Why?
K: Being Kali's slay victim thereby saving the rest of
Realms from feeling the brunt of his anger. ;) Oh, and
helping bring into the Realms the most evil order of
   them all, Baali.

A: What is your favorite part about bing an immortal?
K: My favorite part of being an imm is being able to make
the fun things, like quests and areas.

A: What is your most memorable moment on RoD?
K: Becoming an immortal. It was so incredibly spammy it
took me a week to get used to it.

A: What is your favorite organization in the realms and
   why?
K: Why Baali, of course. Not only because I helped in its
creation, but because its been my family for the
   better part of 5 years.

A: Who is your favorite immortal?
K: my fave imm is IliCutiSexiHoni

----------------------------------------------------------------

A: What would you like to see more of?
K: More quests!

A: What would you like to see less of?
K: Less people who like to spoil others fun [by] breaking
rules and laws, and just plain making a nuisance of
   themselves.

A: For those who want to become immortals, what advice
   would you share?
K: Be patient, be helpful, and most of all be committed
   (to the asylum).

Kador is looking forward to providing more fun for
mortals. When asked about ideas for fun in the future,
he says, "As for future quest plans, well, they are a
doozy ;) fun all around"

Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

INTRODUCTION

Exploration and mapping of areas tends to be rather simple,
as long as the rooms are "well-behaved." This means that
going east from room A leads to room B, and west from
room B leads back to room A. It makes no difference if
mapping is done by hand or by using a mud client's
automapper, both can handle this task without problems.

Things start getting confusing when mazes are encountered.
The rooms all look alike, causing explorers to wander for
miles without reaching any destination, and getting out
becomes nearly impossible.

Hence, this edition of RoD 101 will attempt to explain
the various ways in which mazes can be constructed and
the general strategies for getting through these sticky
clusters of rooms.

----------------------------------------------------------------

TRICKS OF MAZE CONSTRUCTION

This section may become get a bit technical. In order to
immerse oneself completely in the atmosphere of an area,
it goes without saying that it is also possible to become
hopelessly immersed and lost in mazes.

Appreciating maze construction is different from enjoying
the theme of an area. To understand a maze, it is
necessary to examine a maze from a bird's eye view.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

Ways That Builders Complicate Mazes

1) Identical Room Descriptions
The standard uniform of rooms typical found in a "maze"
depict room descriptions all the same. Give each room a
unique description and players can easily where they are
going. This is true even if the exits are one-way or do
not quite link in logical ways. Give each room the same
description, and people tend to become confused and
disoriented.

Note that there are pseudo-mazes in the Realms where two-
way exits are completely static and line up in perfect
Euclidean geometry. Euclidean geometry means that only
one line can be drawn through a point parallel to another
line. However, people do get lost in these mazes, because
the descriptions are all the same. Try to name a few of
these types of mazes.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

2) One-Way Exits
The next easiest way to confuse wanderers involves one-
way exits. Players are accustomed to a consistent grid of
rooms that allow walking in straight lines and back Upon
moving north and finding no south exit, one's spatial
direction is lost. These confusing exits may be linked
to another room, or even back to the same room.

3) Shifting Exits
On top of the mayhem that one-way exits may cause,
certain mazes are set to shift. This means that the north
exit that once lead to room B is now a southeast exit
that leads to room B. The north exit now leads to room C.
Generally, exits only complete this merry-go-round
imitation just after the repop message when the area
resets.

----------------------------------------------------------------

----------------------------------------------------------------

4) Transferring
To make matters worse, sometimes it is not possible to
see the intended destination because it is a "trans" room.
These rooms look just like any other maze room, except
That they will magically transfer you to another room if
you stand about long enough.

5) Opening and Closing Exits
On occasion, room exits open and close causing confustion
As to which ways one can and cannot go.

6) Basic Maze Strategies
Some maze rooms that are nodrop and/or nomagic. They
prevent easy mapping of the maze with simple marking
techniques, and norecall rooms create panic when people
give up solving the maze. They player wants to get out
the "easy way," but cannot.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

Lil' Secret: At the present moment, there are no
dynamically generated mazes in Smaug. In simpler terms,
the code (the computer) does -not- make mazes, human
builders do. Builders may program the computer to help
complicate matters a bit, but mazes are made by people.

This very significant fact means that all mazes are quite
finite. A computer may string 10,000 rooms together
without qualms, but a human would have a headache after a
few hundred. As long as the builders intend for there to
be a start and an end to the maze, explorers may find
them. It may take persistence, but it -is- possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

BASIC STRATEGIES TO SOLVE MAZES

At least 90-95% of the mazes in the Realms of Despair are
solvable with two basic strategies. If it is a big maze,
it may take patience, persistence and determination.

1) Track
If a trackable mob or player is available beyond the maze,
track will normally create a path straight to the target.
Only in complicated mazes that are constructed
differently will this not help.

2) Room Markings + SCRY
These two concepts are the basic foundation of nearly all
maze solution techniques. The idea is to place different
"entities" in each room. This allows for recognition that
the explorer has visited a room and can tell the
individual rooms apart.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

The most commonly used ways of marking rooms:
- drop coins
- create and drop balls of light/food
- create fire/spring
- drop other items
- etc.

The scry spell is the easiest way to determine which
rooms are linked to the one an explorer is currently
standing in. Variations on this include scan and actually
walking into the next room to see.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

MAZE MAPPING TECHNIQUES

+ Minimum Effort
=> Mark Unmarked Rooms and Scry for the Exit

When not planning to walk through the maze more than
once and others (grouped players) do not need to follow
the trail, the quickest way to get to point B is the mark
and scry method.

Drop a mark in the first room and scry for the intended
destination. If it is not there, step into an unmarked
room, mark it (i.e., drop a coin), and scry for the
destination again. Continue to mark rooms and scry until
the destination is finally located.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

Time spent in marking is minimal. However, this method
leaves the maze in a bit of a mess for the next person
walking into it. Always check all directions in a room
before leaving it, or the desired exit may have been
missed. Attempting to relocate the start point will be
difficult with the rooms already marked.

+ Moderate Effort
=> Drop Marks in Numerical Order and Scry for the Exit

When planning to return through a maze various times
before a reboot, it makes sense to lay a trail that may
be followed repeatedly.

Basically, mark the rooms as described above, but give
each room visited a different number of markings or
unique markings. When the end of the maze is reached,
explorers may simply follow the marks 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

For even more efficiency, return to the start of the maze
and scry for marked rooms. It might be that the quickest
path is actually 1, 4, 6 instead.

+ Maximum Effort
=> Mark Every Room Uniquely and Note Down Linked Exits

This method is only for those explorers that must
identify every minor detail of a particular maze, have
plenty of time to kill and have plenty of paper on which
to record findings.

Simply put, the most that can be done to map a specific
maze is to mark every room uniquely. Scry in every room,
to determine which rooms the exits connect to.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

Take a piece of paper, and draw many little squares in
rows and columns. Leave enough space in between the
squares to draw exit lines. Graphing paper may aid in
this process.

Step into the first room of the maze. Mark it as room 1
on the paper and mark the all of the exits leading out of
the room.

Pick an exit at random and mark the next room as 2.
Continue scrying and marking rooms until there are
absolutely no rooms left and all exits link somewhere.

This kind of maze blueprint is much simpler to make if the
exits do not shift. If they do, try to complete the
process within one shifting interval. Otherwise, the
mapping becomes more confusing.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Mapping - by Juliana RoD 101
----------------------------------------------------------------

With all of the room links on paper, the quickest route
from point A to B should be evident.

2 3 4 3 3 1 end

I was hoping that you could help me with a little problem
that I have. You see, my reputation is not exactly the

Dear Little Lost Sheep,
My first reminder is that this is a game. However, it is
a game with its own little society. People me and go from
this society through somewhat of a revolving door

Dear Little Lost Sheep,
What others think of us is in essence unimportant. The
importance arrives when we ourselves place too much
relevance in these views. Instead of attatching such
reverence to what others think, regulate your own
behavior.
If you behave in a manner that seems reasonable and
considerate, others should respond favourably towards
you.
If they do not, dismiss them as worthless. Although...
it is always possible you have no judgement or concept of
what people find offensive. Enjoy!

Dear Myra and Ilsensine,
My buddies and I have a bet going and we need your help.
You see, my friend here says that Iliana is the sexiest

 What do you guys say?
-Curious Chap

Dear Curious Chap,
I have to say that sexiness is purely in the eye of the
beholder. Now, given that I adore both, you have to
realize that one is a sexy pirate and the other is an
cute little pixie. So, if you are in a snuggle mood,
kiss on Tiki. If you are in a playful and naughty mood,
take a walk down the plank with Ili.

Dear Curious Chap,
Hahaha. This one is easy. Ili is the sexiest. The two
deciding factors are as follows.

1) Iliana is an 'Il...' and we are all hot.
2) Tiki is my sister, and a foul seeeeeeester at that!

Sometimes - by Santrilla Voices
----------------------------------------------------------------

Sometimes I wish I were 3 years older,
Sometimes I wish that the whole world was gay,
Sometimes I wish it'll soon be tomorrow,
Sometimes I wish it were still yesterday.

Sometimes I feel I could live to a thousand,
Sometimes I feel I could die in an hour.
Sometimes I feel that I'm tiny and worthless,
Sometimes I feel I have ultimate power.

Sometimes I think that I'm being a moron,
Sometimes I think that my dreams will come true,
But wherever I am, and whatever I'm doing,
The one thing I constantly think of... is you.

(P.S. Thanks Zistrocks for your praise and support with
      this. :D ) 27/07/02

Edible Enterprise - by Elisabet Quests
----------------------------------------------------------------

This month's quest involves your culinary and creative
talents. Your mission is to create a food or beverage (a
tea perhaps) using food items and herbs found about the
realms.

Submissions must use at least 4 items that can be found
within the realms. They must be posted on no more than
two (2) notes and mudmailed to Elisabet no later than
midnight EST on August 21st.

It should be in recipe format and include how much of
each item is needed. Winners will be chosen by a panel
of hungry and thirsty immortals.

Good luck! May your culinary senses be with you!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Greetings all fellow friends,
It surely has been a while since I've been able to write
Elisabet's Corner and be here to enjoy its posting. Thank
you for all of your understanding while I was away.
Special thanks to Tical who has been helping greatly with
posting the Cry of Despair, and the fabulous staff who
has not missed a beat.
I'd like to say thank you and goodbye to Khaimran who has
stepped down as editor. He will surely be missed. His
hard work has helped the Cry of Despair flourish.
I'd also like to welcome Myra, who after serving on the
Staff actively for many months, will make a perfect
addition as editor.
I hope you enjoyed our issue this month, and look forward,
as I always do, to next month's issue.
Faithfully,
Elisabet
