When I first came up with the idea to write this
article, I approached it with the same idea I had with
the 'Kuahs Friends' articles I have done and had a
plan to poke fun at it. I mean just how goofy would
explaining to a non-mudder that you were married to
an elven cleric. No one falls in love with text do
they?
Then it all hit. A phone call from a friend of mine
who lives states away from me in Michigan. We used to
hang out on muds years ago. I'm talking early DIKU
type muds when color on a mud was rare and mahn-tor
was the big mob on the scene. Anyway, after hanging
up the phone and catching up with everything, I had
flashbacks of why he left for Michigan in the first
place. He went up there to get married. Married to
a woman he married on a mud two years before.

So I decided to take a better approach, a smarter
and open approach to a subject that many players
seem to truly care about. Mud marriage.
I sent out word weeks ago that I was looking for
couples who would like to sit and answer my prodding
and sometimes personal questions. I asked for couples
to share the stories they had. I have had the honor to
meet with many of you and the honor of hearing about
your mud marriages and real life experiences.
I want to start by saying thanks to all of you.
You are all truly lucky people. To find the friendship
you have found in each other on a thing such as this
mud, Realms of Despair.

Let us start, shall we? I suppose I do not have to go
into the details of chemistry on how people meet and
fall in love. I could not honestly give the explanation
justice. Add that to the fact that most of the time
your working with text on a screen and imagination to
communicate so for a spark to start a fire in an
environment such as this seems a million to one. But trust
me, it can happen. And often does.
Let us fast forward beyond all the flirts and games,
(even if that part alone can be soooo much fun), and
let us jump to sometime after the couple has spent some
time together. There comes a time when they decide to
take it a step further. So how does one propose on a
mud? How does one 'pop the question'?
Cyniq who is mud married to Leala just said he used
the propose social, but there was more to it when it
came to Lealas mud parents, there was a more difficult
and interesting approach.

Cyniq: Well, Leala's mud Parents Cameio and Vir were
going to retire from RoD so we thought it would be
great to have their only mud daughter marry before
before they left. We got Camieos blessing but then
we had to ask Vir... Well Vir said that since Leala
is his only daughter that I should quest for her. He
then gave me a quest, I got all the items except 1
and that was a dinghy. I heard it was in shadowport
so I went there to look, ended up DTing. I Lost a
lot of nice EQ but it didn't matter to me because
I got to marry Leala and Vir gave us his blessing.
And Elisabet was kind enough to share with me the
story of how Fademan proposed to her.
Elisabet: There had been something between us for
quite a while, although I think perhaps
talking more and more for him to ask.
It was very straightforward. He got down
on one knee and told me he'd be honored if
I would marry him. I smiled and said yes!

One of the realms longest couples, (over a year and
still act like newlyweds), LLaura and Vaile Blackrose.
The story of his proposal is special.
LLaura: Well first of all it took him 3 months which
is a long time on a mud
Vaile: Oh you knew I was going to.
LLaura: Well I was beginning to wonder. But he went
'I will brb'. We were in the garden of the
asylum. He went and got me this ring,
(Vaile's Love and Devotion).
Vaile: I was thinking... and I recalled. Got her a
ring and a rose. I came back and smiled at
her. We talked for a minute and I kept
hidden the reason I recalled for a bit.

LLaura: It was driving me nuts.
Vaile: And then I asked her to marry me. I gave
her the ring and rose.
LLaura: He did it in a traditional way on his knee.
Vaile: And it only took me three months.
Next week we'll continue the look at mud marriages
and the next step with the wedding ceremony. The dress,
the place and the act itself.

+How long have you been a Role Player,What first interested you in playing?
Juliana: 'I've been seriously RPing on RoD for about 1 year now. I've play
roleplaying games before this IRL, but I never realised the MUD could be used
to RP...until...I saw Aelrynn's webpage...The Art of Roleplaying. A lot of the
logs there showed what RPing in RoD was about, and inspired me to find these
RPers in RoD. So I send Aelrynn a tell, she hooked me in like she does all her
RP recruits, and I've never looked back. :)'

+What first inspired your interest in RP from the very start?
Juliana: From the very start, it had to be the inquisition logs on the site
Sebastius was RPed beautifully. And when I actually tried to RP Juli on the
MUD itself, I had the fortune of bumping right into Dalamar and Faya on my
first two RP tries. :) The two of them RPed fantastically with a newbie at
RP and provided the somewhat addictive adrenaline boost you get after a good
round of roleplaying.
Juliana grins evilly.
You say 'yes, its a definite love affair when you come off a good scene :)

+What would you say was your biggest obstacle to learning how to RP?
Juliana: Hmm...finding enough RPers to roleplay and practise with. :)

internet. ;)

+How do you keep yourself fresh and avoid RP burn out?
Juliana laughs. Juliana says 'I don't.'
You laugh.
You say Then what do you do to recover from RP burnout?
Juliana burns out every once a while, and goes out of sight...doing runs and
other 'normal' mud stuff.
Micala nods as she can relate to that.
Juliana: Then I start needing to RP again, and I go over Juli's personality
and try to find a new facet to explore that I didn't know before. Worse come
to the worse, I start another character and play that for a while, before I go
back to Juli. :) Usually my burnouts are directly related to the number of logs
sitting in my hard drive waiting to be edited. :) So I try to finish them and
upload them before I continue. It also helps me review what's been going on
in the general RP scene. :)'

+What advice do you have for new players?
Juliana sits down and thinks deeply.
Juliana: Always RP whenever you have the chance to. It gives you practice
and improves the quality of your RP. But respect the rights of everyone else.
It doesn't make a good story if one person 'wins' all the time.'

She found Wavin in the herb garden. Micala knew the mage would be up for
just about anything, especially anything that even remotely smacked of
adventure. Together they went down to the darkened cellar to explore and
found the ratling. It was such an odd little creature and being a rat..it
was destined to die. Die it did, and the next that crept out from the crack
in the wall..and the next. T'was a pity that nosey castle page, Oisin, had to
come see what they were up to. Tho had he not 'tumbled down the stairs' and
fallen upon their swords Micala and Wavin wouldnt have had nearly so much fun.
It wasn't until they took the corpses up to leave with Fis that they noticed
the mouse scampering about. Then another and another, till the castle was
fairly seething with field mice. Cute little things they were too. One did
tricks for them in the castle entry. It was quite taken with Queen Xanthia
and did it's best to be charming. Until it pounced upon the Queen and got a
sword from Sir Ynnug for it's efforts.

That seemed to be the turning point, for the mice ceased to be cute and after
running all over the castle trying to round them up RNF discovered something
much more sinister.Or rather Vaneranin did, A Giant Rat in the tower.
Since Vaneranin already had quite a little troupe of charmed mice following
him about, he decided to add the rat. The Rat had other plans and promptly
killed him. What followed can only be described as a warfare that fueled the
bloodlust of the Rol Na Feinne. Zenobia, being the curious type, decided to
test out a couple of spells upon it. The Rat brought an end to that with a
brutal smiting. And on the battle raged, each member who came anew to the
castle castle leapt into the fray until soon there was a fair sized group....
Vaneranin, Kaan, Wavin, Magiua, Micala, Garland, Menoch, Quanmyki, Shin,
Sunfire and Moonfire.

They tested the rodent here and there and soon discovered that their efforts
brought very little damage while The Rat bit and kicked so savagely that it
wasn't long before there accumulated quite a pile of corpses. 312 to be exact,
not counting the ones that decayed during the bloodfest..were counted. In time,
however, with the persistance of the Knights and massive amounts of healing
powders the Rat fell, with the final kick of death delivered by Shin.
The Rol Na Feinne healed, sorted corpses, repaired and boasted, tho none could
figure out what exactly triggered the onslaught of mice and that Rat. Wavin
and Micala had their suspicions tho and sighed with resignation that perhaps
Oisin does have a purpose after all.

A California-based animal rights group has launched a campaign asking the
City of San Francisco to phase out the legal concept of pet ownership,
replacing the term "owner" with the more egalitarian "guardian" to tear
down the idea that animals can be human property.
"Society first moved away from women and wives as property, then it moved
away from African Americans as property," Elliott Katz, a licensed
veterinarian and president of the group, In Defense of Animals, told
Reuters Friday.
"Now a large segment of people are beginning to move away from the concept
of animals as property. We are asking the city to recognize that."
Thursday, the group went before the city's Animal Control and Welfare
Commission seeking approval for a proposal which would take the first step
toward ending animal ownership by adding the words "and/or pet guardians"
to every city law that mentions "pet owners".

looking for good items
and haggling with the owners
just for a deal to spite them.
Equipment repaired and readied,
skills now finely honed,
they set out the next day on their trip
to find the creature's home.
Days like weeks and hours worse,
they trudged through the realms

This must be the creature's hassle.

whole new look. As the new head of the program, I have brought about some
changes which will revive the activity of the program. All druids, whether
guilded or not can expect help from the Guild, and there will be many notes
