Thankfully, he did\n\n agree to do it, so this is the first part of a three part interview\n\n series regarding NC. Hopefully, we can shed a little light on one of\n\n the councils that doesn't get much open attention.\n\n \n\n When did you first join Newbie Council?\n\n \n\n About this time last year, on my 610th birthday. I had always intended\n\n to Join NC. Back in Brittany's days she often asked me to, but I didn't\n\n wanna give up playing the game for myself until I was sure I was done.\n\n I did a lot of help for the NC back in it's early days, and was often\n\n groupped with NCers, to help on CRs and whatnot, back when Clerics first\n\n became so useful. When I finally decided I was done learning\n\n everything, I allowed myself to Avatar and agreed to join...I avatared\n\n at 600.\n\n \n\n What made you -want- to join NC?\n\n \n\n They keep bringin' in new areas, many came after I was already too high\n\n for them so I had to start new characters to look and be learned by who\n\n it was built for. It sure is easy to level when you know everything you\n\n should know.\n\n \n\n You had no real desire to help newbies, but to simply explore?\n\n \n\n I was adopted by Grace Gemstone when I was about level 4, way back\n\n before she was the queen of the dwarves... And she seemed to know\n\n everything, I decided I oughtta make sure I knew everything there\n\n was to know...I found that a great knowledge of everything that exists\n\n at the various levels makes it unbelievably easy to do anything, and\n\n helping people has always been my style. Being a Cleric meant that I\n\n could identify everything as I went... And I was not interested in\n\n levelling quickly... I figure this world is gonna exist forever, why\n\n get bored of it before neccessary.\n\n \n\n How long ago did you become the head of NC?\n\n \n\n It's a heck of a Job... Sarah made me Co-head a couple of months ago\n\n because there's just so much that needs to be done. Unfortunately she\n\n has had to step out of the position, so I got the head position by\n\n default. But I have some of the best people in the world helping me,\n\n Raltaris, Loril etc... So everything will eventually work out.\n\n \n\n Is there any way you have seen NC evolve during your time on it?\n\n \n\n Hmmmm... I have seen it evolve greatly over the years... But since I've\n\n been on it, for such a short time, the evolution is not extreme... I\n\n have seen a lot of good people do a lot of good work, but it's always\n\n been that way...In the Old days, it used to be mostly Vampires on the\n\n council, and it has now evolved to almost nothing but Clerics, Magi and\n\n Druids...People's ways of helping the newbies has changed a lot too.\n\n It used to be that giving vague hints was all it took for a newbie to\n\n gain the desire to explore further and find new things...\n\n \n\n Now if you don't give the lazy morons exact directions they swear at you\n\n in tells. So, yeah... I guess I have seen changes... I think it's\n\n going pretty well evolving as the realms do. I'd like to see it\n\n continue to grow. There are still times of the day where no councillors\n\n are on at all and it'd be nice to have a few on at all times. But it\n\n will, enthusiasm is good and the councillors are doing a good job of\n\n creating a capable bunch outta the current newbies. Hopefully they'll\n\n join us in our efforts when they're ready.\n\n \n\n As you've seen it happen in the past, do you think the newbie will grow\n\n more impatient and intolerable in the future?\n\n \n\n Yes. I think that if they're not encouraged to be self reliant, they'll\n\n continue to get worse generation to generation... But isn't that what\n\n all old folks say about \"Kids these days\"? I hope that there's enough\n\n people out there to encourage others to play the mud and explore, that\n\n the gameplay won't be lost.\n\n \n\n Do you think a lot of newer players problems could be taken care of if\n\n they just read the guide given to them at the start of the game?\n\n \n\n It would certainly help... And if they would just spend some time\n\n reading the helpfiles while they're sleeping up HP and Mana. I'm not\n\n sure that half the avatars have ever typed 'comm' and read the help\n\n files for the commands listed that they didn't yet know... But they\n\n could have done so at level 2 and been capable.\n\n \n\n But Again... I'm a cleric... Plenty of time to read 'hlist a' ,\n\n 'hlist b', etc. while sleeping up mana before meditate and trance were\n\n discovered. I think that too many people think they have to try to\n\n level quickly. When they become avatars they know nothing but\n\n exploring the un-explored areas has no challenge so they decide they're\n\n bored.\n\n \n\n I heard something over chat the other day that I found humourous...\n\n \"A newbie asked for help, and someone told him to read a certain help\n\n file, and he commented: \"Awwwww...I have to read?!?\" Do you find this\n\n attitude more and more here with all the graphical games there are?\n\n \n\n I hope he was joking... Assuming he was. I think that there will\n\n always be people who prefer this mud to any graphical game out there.\n\n I know I will. I don't need the builders to draw a .gif of what they\n\n think each room looks like. I have read the room descriptions and I\n\n know perfectly well what they look like to me.\n\n \n\n Some people may prefer a graphical game, some people may prefer\n\n nintendo, some people may prefer to use the internet to surf the web.\n\n to get away from that RL place. It's not for everyone, but we're not\n\n suffering from a shortage of players. Let those who love it continue\n\n to love it forever.\n\n \n\n Has there been any time that is really memorable for you with the\n\n council?\n\n \n\n There really isn't any specific time, I think my best time was when I\n\n was inducted the first time, it was really nice to see so many people\n\n happy to have me as a part of their cause. I also enjoy inducting new\n\n councillors, each of those is great.\n\n \n\n Is there any really tough thing you've had to do on NC, or any rude\n\n newbie that really stands out?\n\n \n\n Really tough thing is when you find someone who really is trying,\n\n keeps getting killed because they are so explorative and so you help\n\n them and get them on their feet pointed in the right direction...\n\n Then they die again, can't get any help and disappear. There are a few\n\n newbies and oldies alike that have been particularly annoying...But\n\n they don't exist anymore so they can pass into forgotten memory.\n\n Usually with the irritating ones, once it's suggested to them that they\n\n actually try, they do and become too busy to remain annoying...\n\n Or they go away.\n\n \n\n How exactly does one get into NC?\n\n \n\n Right now it is by sponsership only, but there have been times when we\n\n would accept all applications...Once a councillor sponsers someone they\n\n obtain the application from the applicant. The guidelines for writing\n\n the application are laid out on the Newbie Board in Academy. The\n\n Sponserer gives me the application and I post it on the Newbie\n\n Council's Noteboard. During the first two weeks, the councillors do\n\n whatever they can to get an interview in with the sponsered person to\n\n form an opinion for their voting. After the first two weeks, I open\n\n voting on the application and for the next two weeks the councillors\n\n vote whether or not they believe the person ought to be inducted, and\n\n whether or not now is the right time.\n\n \n\n After the 2 voting weeks are complete (Or if it's absolutely obvious how\n\n the vote is going to go) The person is either given a mudmail explaining\n\n why now is not the time for them to join (We don't want to ruin the game\n\n for people who aren't finished). Or I induct them.\n\n \n\n You've mentioned how being an NC wrecks the game a few times. Why do\n\n you believe that?\n\n \n\n A lot is talked about in channels that is neccessary to complete\n\n council tasks at hand. Like where certain keys come from and which\n\n doors are pickable, which ones are bashable etc... It's a lot of fun\n\n for a lot of people to discover it on their own. I bet if we randomly\n\n grabbed 10 avatars outta the who 50 50 list, no more than 2 of them\n\n would be able to tell us where the key to the Doom Mountain Boulder is.\n\n \n\n Most people think there isn't one. But for the purpose of a quick CR,\n\n it's neccessary to get councillors from point A to Point B quickly and\n\n make sure that they know what keys to grab along the way.\n\n \n\n Is their anything you'd like to tell newbies or lowbies?\n\n \n\n Take your time... It'll all be over too soon anyway, enjoy everything,\n\n relax, read everything you can from the helpfiles and room descriptions\n\n to the noteboards and general chatter. This place can be great.\n\n \n\n \n\n Edmond and TS\n\n \n\n What is the main purpose of the symposium?\n\n \n\n A medium for mortal suggestions, a way for the mortal community to put\n\n together well thought out, sound proposals and lay them on the tables\n\n of the immortals for review and approval.\n\n \n\n How does someone become an at-large representative, and what are the\n\n specifics of that position?\n\n \n\n Currently, to become an at-large member you need to be sponsored for\n\n the position. Our at-large members are considered experts at the game,\n\n and we look for people that understand the inner workings of the game.\n\n Responsibility wise, it's no different than a guild\/order or clan\n\n representative, they merely have no one to answer to for their \"voting\".\n\n \n\n Conversely, how does one become an organzation representative?\n\n \n\n When an organization, whether guild\/order\/clan, has an opening for\n\n a spot, it is up to that particular organization to set their standards.\n\n We accept their nominations generally without question.\n\n \n\n What is your role in The Symposium?\n\n \n\n I get two roles, primarily, I guide the other TS immortals with\n\n instructing the mortals on creating sound proposals and delegating the\n\n authority to the senior members for leading a subcommittee. As the TS\n\n Head I get the privilege of being the driving force behind the process\n\n of bringing in mortals to the ranks of immortality.\n\n \n\n How does The Symposium decide on an issue?\n\n \n\n It typically depends on the issue. For most issues items are discussed\n\n by subcommittees. When a final proposal is ready to be made it is\n\n brought to the TS floor for voting. It is voted and debated on in a\n\n full TS meeting. From there, the TS imms will take the next step in the\n\n proposal process, which is the Visionary Consortium.\n\n \n\n What issues are dealt with in The Symposium, and what issues are\n\n definitely not?\n\n \n\n We generally will allow discussion of any subject, from code updates,\n\n to spells\/skills, areas, new area needs, old area changes. We'll let\n\n anything be discussed amongst the mortals. Though its not uncommon for\n\n the immortals to remain silent on subjects that are already ongoing\n\n projects.\n\n \n\n What are some ways a non-TS member can bring an idea to the Symposium?\n\n \n\n The best two ways are to grab your organizational member if you\n\n belong to one, if you don't - any member will generally be willing\n\n to discuss new ideas. Or you can post your idea to the Tome of\n\n Conception in Town Hall for general public review. TS members check\n\n that and often bring ideas from there to the full TS table.\n\n \n\n \n\n Next issue this feature will continue with quotes and small interviews\n\n with members of each council. Thanks to Edmond and Stoneheft for taking\n\n the time to sit with us, and thanks to Dein and Naithalia for the\n\n interviews.\n\n \n\n ========================================================================\n\n Quest and Contest By: Quest Council\n\n ========================================================================\n\n \n\n The Raltaris Wardrobe Winners\n\n FIRST PLACE Valin\n\n items:\n\n a crown of jewels, a pair of diamond earrings, a moon shaped amulet,\n\n a pair of long white gloves, Tabard of the Roses, some leather pants,\n\n an iridescent silk tunic, a morris handkerchief, winged sandals,\n\n two glinting rings of silver and a small silver locket.\n\n \n\n First, we start off with the body wear. I chose the Tabard of Roses\n\n because it's elegant in style and it shows that you have Lady Kherrian\n\n of Dragon Pass' approval of wearing such a nice tabard.\n\n \n\n Next, we have the leather pants, it's not as airy as any other pants,\n\n but it shows your tight physique and how fancy you are to wear such\n\n and expensive fabric. Thirdly, we have the winged sandals. It gives you\n\n quick speed and agility; the ability to fly from distant places.\n\n \n\n The people will be impressed with you, knowing that you are wearing\n\n the sandals of the gods. The crown will show that you are respected\n\n within many, ruler to some, showing the Duke that you are a very\n\n commendable person, not only in strength, but in wealth and poverty.\n\n \n\n The white gloves, show that you have class, like others that will\n\n attend. You will wear them to show that you are gentlemen like, while\n\n locket you wear around your neck, show that you have a sensitive side,\n\n that you have catched the heart of another, proving to the other guests,\n\n you too, are able of true love. The silver rings, and the diamond\n\n earrings, both show contrast of the common jewelry, to the expensive\n\n design.\n\n \n\n It shows others that you have a wide range of thinking, an open mind,\n\n is something hard to find these days. The amulet is to show that you\n\n are Celestial, one with the gods. The handkerchief, also shows a\n\n kindness in your heart, allowing to give a cloth to another, to wipe\n\n their tears when they see how handsome you look, knowing that you are\n\n taken by another...\n\n \n\n There you go Raltaris, your nice Wardrobe =)\n\n \n\n \n\n Second Place: Kuah\n\n items:\n\n a jester's hat, a pair of stilts, bright blue baggy pants,\n\n a Silk shirt, the shades, a girdle of many pouches,\n\n three balls of light , a deck of cards and\n\n an invitation to the 6th Anniversary Reunion\n\n \n\n Ralt, from what I know of you, you are a quite the cut-up and funny.\n\n Even a few times we had the same snappy comeback. The magic of cards has intrigued many. Today I used a\n\n one card spread for each of the races of nations. I selected a card\n\n at random from the Major Arcana and wrote what may be in the future\n\n for the nation and the people.\n\n \n\n Pixies: THE STAR\n\n I see much faith deserved in your future, both for the whole nation and\n\n the individuals. You are entering another quiet period in which you can\n\n contemplate the inner life without any goal in mind. Much celebration\n\n is in order. The Star inspires you, recommending generosity to the less\n\n fortunate.\n\n Drow: THE DEVIL\n\n Your minds are dominated by the faults in others - pride, arrogance,\n\n jealousy, greed, emptiness. While these faults make exist in others, your\n\n current perception may be tainted by your own pain. The Devil manipulates\n\n through logic. Only through the creative mediums will you find truth.\n\n Make yourself too busy to be critical.\n\n \n\n Half-troll: THE HIEROPHANT\n\n Greed hinders your genuine desire for spiritual enlightenment. Accept\n\n your nature as a valuable asset in the development of higher mind.\n\n You think much of yourself for your detached criticisms of others, but\n\n it's only revealing your own weakness. Look for the value of law in\n\n your daily life.\n\n Half-ogre: THE FOOL\n\n This nation lacks focus. The actions of The Fool violate convention,\n\n yet The Fool is driven by the creative fire of higher purpose. Avoid\n\n internal confrontation and focus on asserting your position in the Nations.\n\n Half-elf: THE CHARIOT\n\n You have found a place. Enjoy the recognition that comes your way but\n\n avoid smugness. Spend time teaching the youth of your nation the ways\n\n of your kind. You will come to balance, as steady as a stone on its flat\n\n side, but be wary... someone in your ranks considers the path of the traitor.\n\n Elf: WHEEL OF FORTUNE\n\n The Wheel is a circle, and all the changes it makes are both an outgrowth\n\n of what has come before and a presage of what is coming. Take heart, The\n\n Wheel always moves forward. Even in apparent obstruction you will find the\n\n positive, changes that will benefit you. Trust your intuition.\n\n \n\n Half-orc: THE HIGH PRIESTESS\n\n Memory is a powerful tool. The High Priestess suggests that you\n\n meditate on your past in order to understand your current position. In\n\n this this way you maximize the creative potential of the moment.\n\n Sea-elf: THE MOON\n\n Past, present and future unfold before you. The moment turns dark, fear\n\n threatens to paralyze you, but I see you moving forward into the the unknown\n\n landscape with an encouraging but naive bravery. Go softly, treading this\n\n path that is both universal and completely unique to you.\n\n Gith: THE EMPEROR\n\n Logic will save you here. The Emperor got to his positition by using\n\n everything at his disposal, and so should you. By keeping an open\n\n mind, a new honor is bestowed. A woman plays key role. Be careful what\n\n you wish for.\n\n Human: THE HERMIT\n\n You reassess the situation, finding yourself deserted by former allies.\n\n Relationships change drastically. Only you can make sure the change\n\n will be for good. Await an animal with a message.\n\n Dwarf: DEATH\n\n Take up a new direction. Rid yourself of lingering issues. A disappoint-\n\n ment comes, but think carefully. Did you make your desires known? Take\n\n care that your values are mirrored in your actions. Be awake to life's\n\n possibilities.\n\n \n\n Gnome: TEMPERANCE\n\n You are reaping the benefits of a recent introspection. Do not neglect\n\n your role as peacemaker. In this way all will see your strength.\n\n \n\n Lizardmen: JUSTICE\n\n You believe you are in control, but I see a hidden being aiding you. Your\n\n awareness of your inner values and urges positions you to accept spiritual\n\n guidance as it comes. A legal difficulty affects you, but not the way you\n\n think.\n\n \n\n Halfling: STRENGTH\n\n Strength guides you to your ultimate purpose - child plays key role. Wealth\n\n within grasp. Carefully negotiate, you will need allies in a coming struggle,\n\n and it will pay off to do favors now.\n\n \n\n Till next issue...\n\n \n\n ========================================================================\n\n Funny Bones By: CoD Staff\n\n ========================================================================\n\n \n\n Flumple\n\n \n\n Flumple: *flumples*\n\n \n\n Someone: Hush you\n\n \n\n Flumple: Flumple?\n\n \n\n Someone: no more flumple\n\n Teltan: dunno when a someone tells you to hush you should hush :P\n\n \n\n Nullandvoid: More Flumple! I asked on\n\n our avatar-Talk-Show-channel, that I needed some victims...er...\n\n volunteers for my next story. Menien piped up and yelled out 'Ooo!\n\n Me!' and told me that he never gets picked on anymore. Nasil, being\n\n the big nose he is, said that he's a nose and he's supposed to be\n\n picked.\n\n \n\n Nasil proceeded to sneeze all over Menien and laugh at Menien's goo\n\n covered body. Menien grabbed a small tissue and wiped off his whole\n\n body with it (don't ask me how he did it, but he did). Menien took\n\n another tissue and slapped it across Nasil's face yelling out, 'I\n\n challenge you to a duel!'. Nasil sneered at Menien and slapped him\n\n across the face with his giant nose saying, 'I accept'.\n\n \n\n Menien took another tissue and wiped his face were some goo got on.\n\n Nasil and Menien made the duel to be at sunset later that day. Nasil\n\n took off for awhile and Menien started to ready himself. He wore\n\n his fabled 'Tissue gauntlets' and placed his legendary armor 'Bounty'\n\n on his body.\n\n \n\n He donned a tissue box on his head as his helmet and placed 2 rolls of\n\n toilet paper around his neck as his neck wear. He took up his black\n\n hilted sword called 'Nosewipe' and dual wielded his claw, 'Cleanex'.\n\n \n\n Menien looked great. All wrapped up in toilet paper and tissues, he\n\n looked like the legendary hero of Tissues. Menien grinned to himself\n\n and said to me, 'I'm going to wipe that nose off of Nasil's face'.\n\n Menien took off and Nasil came back to ready himself.\n\n \n\n He wore his Snot Gaunts and donned his fabled armor 'Goo'.For his neck\n\n wear, he picked his nose and strung around two stringy gooey things\n\n around his neck (hey, that IS pretty gross) and for his head wear he\n\n put a nose ring in his nose.\n\n He took up his sword called 'Snotball' and dual wielded his cleaver\n\n 'Stringslicer'. He was as ready as Menien. Menien came back to where\n\n Nasil was and started to gag as he looked Nasil's equipment.\n\n \n\n Nasil snickered and the time came around when the sun set and it was\n\n sunset...yeah.\n\n \n\n They both took off to the arena and waited their respected times to\n\n drop down to the arena. An immortal who wished to be named anonymous\n\n (since this never would have been told except they asked for it), came\n\n down to meet the two and collect the fee. They both fell down to the\n\n arena and started tracking each other.\n\n \n\n This went on for what seemed to be like... oh maybe 2 minutes? They\n\n found each other and the battle went under way. Menien took the first\n\n attack, swiping and making Nasil blow his nose and cleanse that goo out\n\n of there, little did Menien know that Nasil had some left in reserve.\n\n Nasil slashed at Menien with his snotball and covered Menien's legs\n\n with the sticky goo, making Nasil vomit covered by Menien since it was\n\n pretty gross.\n\n \n\n Menien quickly cleaned his feet with a tissue and proceeded to\n\n roundhouse Nasil with a tissue covered cleanser. That kick nocked\n\n Nasil's weapon, 'Stringslicer' out of his hand and went flying and\n\n splattered all over the wall. Nasil got mad and sneezed all over\n\n Menien. Menien vomited over Nasil and Nasil took another sneeze at\n\n Menien but dodged the vomit this time.\n\n \n\n An immortal who chose to be named Anonymous, let's call him 'Herne'\n\n came down and told the two to stop this nonsense since it's stinking\n\n up the place. Nasil grinned evilly at Menien as did Menien to Nasil.\n\n \n\n Nasil then quickly sneezed all over this 'Herne' and in which made\n\n Menien vomit all over this immortal. They quickly went to work, as\n\n this 'Herne' was helpless against these powers...plus he didn't want\n\n to get anything in his eyes or mouth, since that'd just make him\n\n vomit.\n\n \n\n Nasil and Menien relentlessly sneezed and vomited all over this\n\n 'Herne' until the immortal jumped back to wherever he came from.\n\n Nasil shaked hands with Menien and they both went home to have a bath\n\n to get rid of the gunk that covered their bodies. Meanwhile, that\n\n immortal 'Herne' plotted revenge....but that's another story all\n\n together.\n\n \n\n ========================================================================\n\n Group News By: CoD Staff\n\n ========================================================================\n\n \n\n The Guild of Nephandi would like to welcome its new members: Mazzic,\n\n Niabox, Melindora, Zeekor, and Gendul.
