It makes no difference if\nmapping is done by hand or by using a mud client's\nautomapper, both can handle this task without problems.\n\nThings start getting confusing when mazes are encountered.\nThe rooms all look alike, causing explorers to wander for\nmiles without reaching any destination, and getting out\nbecomes nearly impossible.\n\nHence, this edition of RoD 101 will attempt to explain\nthe various ways in which mazes can be constructed and\nthe general strategies for getting through these sticky\nclusters of rooms.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nTRICKS OF MAZE CONSTRUCTION \n\nThis section may become get a bit technical. In order to\nimmerse oneself completely in the atmosphere of an area,\nit goes without saying that it is also possible to become\nhopelessly immersed and lost in mazes.\n\nAppreciating maze construction is different from enjoying\nthe theme of an area. To understand a maze, it is\nnecessary to examine a maze from a bird's eye view.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nWays That Builders Complicate Mazes\n\n1) Identical Room Descriptions \nThe standard uniform of rooms typical found in a \"maze\"\ndepict room descriptions all the same. Give each room a\nunique description and players can easily where they are\ngoing. This is true even if the exits are one-way or do\nnot quite link in logical ways. Give each room the same\ndescription, and people tend to become confused and\ndisoriented.\n\nNote that there are pseudo-mazes in the Realms where two-\nway exits are completely static and line up in perfect\nEuclidean geometry. Euclidean geometry means that only\none line can be drawn through a point parallel to another\nline. However, people do get lost in these mazes, because\nthe descriptions are all the same. Try to name a few of\nthese types of mazes.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\n2) One-Way Exits\nThe next easiest way to confuse wanderers involves one-\nway exits. Players are accustomed to a consistent grid of\nrooms that allow walking in straight lines and back Upon\nmoving north and finding no south exit, one's spatial\ndirection is lost. These confusing exits may be linked\nto another room, or even back to the same room.\n\n3) Shifting Exits\nOn top of the mayhem that one-way exits may cause,\ncertain mazes are set to shift. This means that the north\nexit that once lead to room B is now a southeast exit\nthat leads to room B. The north exit now leads to room C.\nGenerally, exits only complete this merry-go-round\nimitation just after the repop message when the area\nresets.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\n4) Transferring\nTo make matters worse, sometimes it is not possible to\nsee the intended destination because it is a \"trans\" room.\nThese rooms look just like any other maze room, except\nThat they will magically transfer you to another room if\nyou stand about long enough.\n\n5) Opening and Closing Exits\nOn occasion, room exits open and close causing confustion\nAs to which ways one can and cannot go.\n\n6) Basic Maze Strategies\nSome maze rooms that are nodrop and\/or nomagic. They\nprevent easy mapping of the maze with simple marking\ntechniques, and norecall rooms create panic when people\ngive up solving the maze. They player wants to get out\nthe \"easy way,\" but cannot.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nLil' Secret: At the present moment, there are no\ndynamically generated mazes in Smaug. In simpler terms,\nthe code (the computer) does -not- make mazes, human\nbuilders do. Builders may program the computer to help\ncomplicate matters a bit, but mazes are made by people.\n\nThis very significant fact means that all mazes are quite\nfinite. A computer may string 10,000 rooms together\nwithout qualms, but a human would have a headache after a\nfew hundred. As long as the builders intend for there to\nbe a start and an end to the maze, explorers may find\nthem. It may take persistence, but it -is- possible.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nBASIC STRATEGIES TO SOLVE MAZES\n\nAt least 90-95% of the mazes in the Realms of Despair are\nsolvable with two basic strategies. If it is a big maze,\nit may take patience, persistence and determination.\n\n1) Track\nIf a trackable mob or player is available beyond the maze,\ntrack will normally create a path straight to the target.\nOnly in complicated mazes that are constructed\ndifferently will this not help.\n\n2) Room Markings + SCRY\nThese two concepts are the basic foundation of nearly all\nmaze solution techniques. The idea is to place different\n\"entities\" in each room. This allows for recognition that\nthe explorer has visited a room and can tell the\nindividual rooms apart.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nThe most commonly used ways of marking rooms:\n- drop coins\n- create and drop balls of light\/food\n- create fire\/spring\n- drop other items \n- etc.\n\nThe scry spell is the easiest way to determine which\nrooms are linked to the one an explorer is currently\nstanding in. Variations on this include scan and actually\nwalking into the next room to see.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nMAZE MAPPING TECHNIQUES\n\n+ Minimum Effort\n=> Mark Unmarked Rooms and Scry for the Exit\n\nWhen not planning to walk through the maze more than\nonce and others (grouped players) do not need to follow\nthe trail, the quickest way to get to point B is the mark\nand scry method.\n\nDrop a mark in the first room and scry for the intended\ndestination. If it is not there, step into an unmarked\nroom, mark it (i.e., drop a coin), and scry for the\ndestination again. Continue to mark rooms and scry until\nthe destination is finally located.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nTime spent in marking is minimal. However, this method\nleaves the maze in a bit of a mess for the next person\nwalking into it. Always check all directions in a room\nbefore leaving it, or the desired exit may have been\nmissed. Attempting to relocate the start point will be\ndifficult with the rooms already marked.\n\n+ Moderate Effort\n=> Drop Marks in Numerical Order and Scry for the Exit\n\nWhen planning to return through a maze various times\nbefore a reboot, it makes sense to lay a trail that may\nbe followed repeatedly.\n\nBasically, mark the rooms as described above, but give\neach room visited a different number of markings or\nunique markings. When the end of the maze is reached,\nexplorers may simply follow the marks 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nFor even more efficiency, return to the start of the maze\nand scry for marked rooms. It might be that the quickest\npath is actually 1, 4, 6 instead.\n\n+ Maximum Effort\n=> Mark Every Room Uniquely and Note Down Linked Exits\n\nThis method is only for those explorers that must\nidentify every minor detail of a particular maze, have\nplenty of time to kill and have plenty of paper on which\nto record findings.\n\nSimply put, the most that can be done to map a specific\nmaze is to mark every room uniquely. Scry in every room,\nto determine which rooms the exits connect to.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nTake a piece of paper, and draw many little squares in\nrows and columns. Leave enough space in between the\nsquares to draw exit lines. Graphing paper may aid in\nthis process.\n\nStep into the first room of the maze. Mark it as room 1\non the paper and mark the all of the exits leading out of\nthe room.\n\nPick an exit at random and mark the next room as 2.\nContinue scrying and marking rooms until there are\nabsolutely no rooms left and all exits link somewhere.\n\nThis kind of maze blueprint is much simpler to make if the\nexits do not shift. If they do, try to complete the\nprocess within one shifting interval. Otherwise, the\nmapping becomes more confusing.\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nMapping - by Juliana RoD 101\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\nWith all of the room links on paper, the quickest route\nfrom point A to B should be evident.\n\n2 3 4 3 3 1 end\n \\-|-\/ ----\/ \\---- --|-- --|--\n | 1 |- 5 | 2 |- 2 5 -| 3 | | 4 | | 5 |\n --|-- ----- ----- ----\\ --|--\n start 2 3\n\n----------------------------------------------------------------\nCassa and Blanca's Timely Tidbits - by Cassa + Blanca CBTT\n----------------------------------------------------------------\n\n Hello pretties!
