It takes at least 3 months being on 24x7 before people will \neven know you are around. There are a lot of things to watch out for, and unfortunately, a\nfew unscrupulous people out there. Over the course of the next few issues,\nI hope to share some of the knowledge I have gained with regards to \ntrading. Hopefully the information I provide will be useful to both new\nand experienced players alike. \n \nTrading is a very important part of the game. For some, it's the only way\nto obtain better equipment when, for whatever reason, running is not an\noption. Probably the most important thing to remember is this: Know the\npiece of equipment you're looking for. A little research ahead of time\ncan go a long way toward keeping you out of trouble. Before you start\nlooking around for an item, you should know its full name, keywords,\nstats, and have a general idea of how much it's worth. There are several\nresources on the web which provide a lot of this information. Here are\njust a few:\n \nhttp:\/\/www.silverwolf-den.com\/db\/       - An excellent eq database\nhttp:\/\/www.dcdruids.org\/                - Another eq database; also has\n                                          info on auctioning items\nhttp:\/\/www.poromenos.org\/merchants\/     - A long list of general prices;\n                                          but be cautious... prices can\n                                          change frequently!\n\nNext issue, we'll go into a little more detail about some of the dangers\nof trading. Until then, trade safely!\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 13\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nLets face it, the game is about killing stuff. Most of us spend an\nextraordinary amount of our time killing mobs, finding bigger mobs to\nkill, and getting better at killing mobs. If you are anything like me\nyou'll want to see the mobs die faster, more frequently with a good\nmeasure of splattering blood and disembowelment.\n \nThe trouble I find as a lowbie, particularly something puny like a\nnephandi you'll spend the first 6 levels scratching giant aphids to\ndeath and be lucky to snap off your opponents finger in the process\nlet alone cause something so spectacular as a head plopping from the\nshoulders.  I guess the official line is that you can level perfectly\nwell using what's provided in the Halls of Knowledge, and that is\nwell, for anyone entering these realms must have the basic tools for\ntheir level to hand.  For us non-newbies though, plodding through the\nlow levels with a little black knife is a chore which I for one would\nrather skip and get on to some more interesting levels.\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 14\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nYou will probably have noticed a huge difference in how a Warrior\nbreezes through the low levels with a lot of hack and slash and the\nseeming interminable struggle a pixie nephandi\/cleric has going\nthrough those levels. This has a lot to do with how much damage roll\nthe typical level 2 warrior has compared to the other genres. However,\nthe bulk of the damage roll is due to your strength stat. Basically,\nmore str points means more damage roll points. This means the 25 str\nclasses have a huge dr advantage over the 20 str classes thanks to the\nextra dr that comes along with it.\n \nIn antiquity, I started and gave up leveling several nephandi\nprobably because I had been so used to leveling warriors that the\nnephandi just seemed so ... slow. Happily though, with a little\nplanning your leveling experience can be much enchanced and you can\nrip through those low levels with a Nephandi in much the same way you\nwould with a warrior. All you need to do is ... max your str, add a\nlittle extra damage roll on top of the strength and get a decent\nweapon.\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 15\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nThe Strength\n \nFirstly, maxing str should not be too difficult even for someone with\n9 base. Spells are a must, .. 'Blessing of Thoric', 'ogre might'.\nStrength items, ... frosty roseate rings (x2), iron bracers \n.. well that maxes anything of base 11 and up and all that is\neasy-peasy to collect with a level 10ish character.\n  \nThe Weapon\n \nNow .. the weapon, expect anything you get for free to be worth what\nyou pay for it ! The basic newbies weapon is pretty feeble and alas\n'magic' so it cannot be enchanted in any way. Find yourself a level 2\nweapon elsewhere in the game. A favourite of mine are the 'throwing\ndaggers' from one of Finnock's chums. They come at level 2 and they\nare non-magic. Enchant your dagger: be sure if you are starting a\nNephandi, to get an infuscation from an av nephandi, this is worth +5\nDR which will make your nephandi's hits almost equal to a warrior of\nthe same level. What I've said so far will ease the tedium of the\nfirst few levels quite considerably .. but there is more !\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 16\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nThe Extra Damage Roll\n \nAssuming you are hooked on the game, it is well worth the effort\ntrying to get level 2 traveling cloaks. They are awesome for the +1\ncon at that level but the reason I'm writing about them now is that\nthey have 25hp each ! The boost to hp is invaluable as a safety net in\ncase you are suddenly jumped by aggro mobs and are slow to react\n... or, to get to the point, if you are wearing the cloaks you have\nsufficient hp to wear the 'orb of fire'. The orb reduces hp by 30\n.. so you really need the cloaks to compensate, but the orb also has\n+2 dr on it which makes a massive difference to your killing\npower. That +2 dr represents a 25% increase in damage on a character\nwho currently has 8 dr.\n  \nDoing it with style\n \nThe final trick I have to turbo charge a lowbie is to switch to\naggressive style as soon as possible. This will give you another 10%\nextra damage over being in standard style. Yes .. I know you cannot\nflee in aggro, Yes .. I know many spells can't be cast in aggro style\n.. but who cares ! With massive damage roll, the lowbie mobs you will\nbe fighting through the low levels will be dead before you've even\ndecided what spell to use !\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 17\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nWhen you do start fighting, don't just stand there and expect your\nweapon to do the damage, make use of the secondary attack skills \nthat you can. For most classes that means 'strike', the damage\ndone by strike is based on your damage roll, so strike away and \nmake good use of it :)\n \nStaying Alive.\n\nThe best way to stay alive, is .. kill the mob. However, most mobs\nwill do their best to kill you instead, so what can a level 2 do to\ndefend themselves ? 'sanc' of course, but also armor class.  Lowbie\nmobs have low hitppoints, which makes them easy to kill with your\nmassive dr, they also have low hitroll which means, if you can boost\nyour armor class sufficiently, their chances of landing a blow on you\nwill be very slim. Get armor cast on you, get shield cast on you,\nquaff a 'ethereal web' potion, and if you can get hold of potion which\ncasts 'stone skin' (I believe there is such a thing on a mob\nsomewhere) quaff it too. All that should make you mostly impermeable\nto lowbie mobs.\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 18\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Lessons from the Headmaster                     By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\nWhere to go ?\n  Once you've fixed yourself up as described above, fill your extra\narmor slots with cage mob gear, and sort out whatever stats you want\nto max (without compromising dr too much). Now, head straight for the\nplayground rats, chances are that'll see you to level 3 with a few\nkills. Next thing to do is head toward Shattered Refuge, if you are\nlucky a goblin or three will attempt to mug you on the way and you'll\ngain another level on the way :) Most of the gnomes will fall easily\nto a character equipped as I described and you'll be able to pick and\nchoose some more interesting items of equipment to see you up the next\nfew levels.\n \nCare of your armour.\n  Just as with your horse's tack, it is important to clean and oil your\narmor after use so that it still works well next time you want it. I\nthoroughly recommend storing your precious level 2 traveling cloaks\nbecause they are only 2 ac and will scrap very easily if your sanc\ndrops while fighting. Simply use the level 5 ones instead or whatever\nelse you like for neckwear. After you've gone a few levels with the\ncloaks your hps will be sufficient that you don't need them anymore.\n \nHappy hacking !\nVikktor Karkarov  - The Headmaster.\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 19\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to vote we go!           By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n...with a he he he and ho ho ho, hi ho, hi ho !\n\nVoting time again ! .. It seems like there is seldom a month in the\nRealms passes without some election or other being held. Given that\nthere are 11 guilds, 8 orders and 4 clans, in all that makes 69\nleadership positions it is little wonder that there are changes\noccurring regularly and, due to the fair-mindedness of our current\nleaders, more often than not we find ourselves participating in a\nballot.\n \nThe simplistic view of the democratic process is this: let everyone\ncast a vote and then democracy will have been served. Alas, the\nsimplistic view can fail and in a realm such as this where the number\nof candidates are high relative to the number of voters the failure can \nappear all the more striking.\n \nLet me illustrate this with an example. Suppose we have a Guild of\nMiners, only dwarves may join this illustrious guild and the\nleadership position has become vacant. There are a lot of enthusiastic\ndwarves in the guild and no less than seven of them have come forward\nas candidates: Grumpy,Sneezy,Dopey,Doc,Bignose,Hippy and Dimwit. There\nare a further 15 guildies who are going to vote.\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 20\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to vote we go!           By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nGrumpy is the one candidate almost universally disliked amongst the\nguild, in fact, the only guildies who will vote for him are three\nclose friends through their association in another organization. The\nother 12 voters, although united in their distaste for Grumpy are\notherwise evenly split amongst the other 6 much more palatable\ncandidates.\n \nIn due course, votes are cast and it is found that Grumpy wins on\naccount of his massive 3 votes while all the other 6 candidates only\nmustered 2 votes each.  Yes, that was a fair election, Grumpy won, he\ngot more votes than any other candidate and is justly appointed\nleader. Look carefully at those numbers though, twelve votes were cast\nfor candidates other than Grumpy, but Grumpy won with only 3.\n \nIt is not clear in the above case whether a vote for a non-Grumpy\ncandidate is a vote against Grumpy, all that we can really say is that\nit is not a vote for Grumpy. It should however, I hope, be clear that\nthe above situation has resulted in a winner who is only truly\nsatisfactory to 3 out of the 15 voting members of the Guild.\n\n==============================================================================\n                                                      Page: 21\n==============================================================================\n\n\n\n==============================================================================\n      Hi Ho, Hi Ho, it's off to vote we go!           By: Karkarov\n==============================================================================\n\nI would now like to propose that the Dwarven Guild of Miners\nadopt an alternative strategy for choosing their leader. One such\nalternative voting strategy may be to instruct the voters to assign a\nrank to the candidates in order of preference. When the time comes to\ntally the votes, award points to each candidate based on their rank,\nthat is, 7 points to one whom is ranked 1st, down to one point for the\ncandidate ranked 7th. In design terms\nthe Dark Halls is a building with a garden, a sewer and\nan ajoining area full of ants but is this setup what many\nplayers were expecting? I'd argue no and it could be better\nin many respects. I think that the overall design of the \nDark Halls isn't that bad in visual context, it's open plan\nairy and has space for many players to all move around without\nproblems of lack of mobs vs mass of newcommers. \n \nThe problem with the Dark Halls is it lacks some substance that a\nnew player would look for, such as proper teaching and learning\nfunctions or player involvement (for example mini quests or \nproper teaching would be a plus). The 'academy' isn't really\nan academy currently, there are few 'teaching mobs' and it is\nnot really helping our newbies learn to play the game. The mobs\npresent another area for direct criticism, killer dragoflies,\nslugs and aphids that could easily wipe out a level three fully\ndressed player is not exactly saying, 'yes this game is challenging\nplease stay and learn'. Okay in defense of this players don't lose\nequipment on death until level six, but this presents another problem\non helping the player to get back to the academy. It is easier to\ntype quit rather than help map or use channels.
