For those \nreading at home, where does your name originally come from?\n \nOdessyus> The greek hero Odysseus. They wouldn't auth it, so I had to\nmisspell it!\n \nMalkatov> When did you first start playing realms?\n \nOdessyus> Man, about 12 years ago. I actually found RoD on accident through\nsome weird telnet portal that a person had in an IRC channel.\n \nMalkatov> Given that you've played for so long, has becoming an immortal \nchanged your perspective of the game?\n \nOdessyus> So far, it hasn't really changed my perspective about the game or\nmechanics or anything like that. But, it's changed my perspective on the \nadministration a little bit.\n\nMalkatov> How so?\n \nOdessyus> I was never one of the anti-admin groupies. The game was fun, so I \nalways trusted it was fun because the people who ran the game knew what they \nwere doing. But there were always a few things that made me go \"zuh?\" \n \nOdessyus> Now that I'm an immortal however, and see how things are run and how\nthe rest of the immortals think and react, I'm actually a little surprised that\nmost of the immortals are even more in tune with the game than I originally \nthought, and probably more than other people think. \n \nOdessyus> Basically, I always trusted them before, but now I guess I feel good\nthat I was right about doing so :P\n \n Continued... help CRY4\n\n4\n\n \/\\ \n _ )( _________________________________________________________ \n(_)\/\/\/\/\/\/\/(**)_________________________________________________________> \n )( \n Page 4 \\\/ Interview with Odessyus - Malkatov\n\nMalkatov> Are you the new higher immortal punching bag since Calin got promoted\nto the next rank?\n \nOdessyus laughs.\nOdessyus> I sure get titlejacked at least once a login :P\n\nMalkatov> What activities do you like the most since becoming an imm?'\n \nOdessyus> Well, I was always a builder before (on my own local SMAUG and then \nthe RoD mortal port), so it's pretty neat to have my stuff ported over to the \nimmortal port and play with all the neat new ways to build things.\n \nOdessyus> I also kind of like being on name-authing duty so far. That was\nalways one of my (only?) disgruntled-mortal things. So now I can be an imm who\nisn't an auth-nazi! :P\n \nOdessyus peers intently about the area, looking for thieves no doubt.\n \nMalkatov> Given your recent self-professed leniency, has there been any crazy\nnames that even you had to deny?\n \nOdessyus> Tons and tons. I wonder if those people are actually trying to get \nthose names or are trying to give us a laugh. There's a nice big visible line I\nwon't cross with my self-professed leniency :P\n\nMalkatov> Which immortal activities do you like the least?\n \nOdessyus thinks, 'Hmmmm.'\nOdessyus> I suppose I haven't experienced anything horrible yet. Been playing \nfor so long, was time to give something back. \n \nOdessyus> My secret little goal is to change the sentence \"The admin sucks!\" \nthat you sometimes see, to \"The admin sucks! Well, not all of them.\" It'd be \nneat if I could reach those people. They seem like a tough nut to crack.'\n \nMalkatov> Speaking of tough nuts.. Was the decision to leave Baali to imm a\ndifficult one?\n\nOdessyus seems to agree.\nOdessyus> I've been a part of Baali for so long, through the good, bad, worse,\netc. But, my other bazillions of alts didn't have to imm, so they're still safe\nand sound in that evil citadel.\n \nMalkatov> Ok, there is an evening ball at Seth's Fortress. Which female mob \nwould you take to that ball and why?\n \nOdessyus thinks, 'Hmmmm.'\nOdessyus> I can't take Calin?\n \nMalkatov> Why would you take Calin? :P\n \nOdessyus> We're the best couple runners up in the CRY awards! Such\nas going from a newb, to a guild, order, leadership positions, etc, and then\nfinally imming.\n \nCalin> Well, I started playing when I was 16, joined AF when I was 21.\nI was hooked by the time I joined the AF. As a newb, I joined the guild of\nmages when I was around LvL 26. It took me about 6 months to AV, and it was\nthe best 6 months of game play, ever. I think that by the time I had av'd, I\nhad over 400 mdeaths. For the first 2 years I didn't do a lot, which makes me\nsad because I missed out on a lot of fun stuff while it was a lot easier to\ndo. I traded a lot. I got into Baali in my 2nd or 3rd year playing, back in 98'\nI believe.\n\nVortok nods.\n\nCalin> I got interviewed while I was hammered at the 98' reunion. There\nwere 13 Baali there at that reunion I believe, it was a grand ol time. \n \nVortok> They interviewed you in real life, for the MuD? :p\nCalin> Yep, I don't remember much though. To promote more drunken interviews in\nreal life?\n\nCalin grins.\n \nCalin> Herald Assembly found me, really. The rebel. The kingmaker. The champion. The orphan. In the\nworld of fiction, all of these cliches and many more are used on a frequent\nbasis, and with good reason. These are character about whom readers like to\nread. When written well, they're exciting. When written very well, they're\nrelatable.\n In the following pages, I will elaborate on some of the many character\narchetypes, what they're about, what makes them exciting, and a handful of\ninteresting twists that you can use to freshen up the choice a little. So\nif you're looking to build a new roleplay character, and don't know where\nto start, I implore you: read on!\n \n Part I: The Heroes\n \n Every story, and especially every fantasy story, needs a number of\nthings to make it really pop. One of these things is a great hero around\n\nContinued... help CRY15\n\n15\n\n \/\\ \n _ )( _________________________________________________________ \n(_)\/\/\/\/\/\/\/(**)_________________________________________________________> \n )( \n Page 15 \\\/ Roleplaying with Fire - Alessio\n\nwhich the story can develop. The hero must at once be exciting, inspiring,\nand intriguing, otherwise the reader will likely end up cheering for the\nbad team.\n In roleplay, a good hero is equally as important as he or she is in\nfiction. You want to have fun, and you can't have fun without a conflict\nof some kind: hence the need for a hero and a villain (or a protagonist\nand antagonist, if you're the picky type).\n Listed below are a handful of heroic archetypes from which you can\nbuild your own.\n \n The Underdog\n The boy who was picked on by all the other boys, only to grow up into\nthe powerful champion of a local lord, is a perfect example of the underdog\narchetype, also dubbed 'The Unlikely Hero'.\n One of the things that makes this hero archetype so effective is that it\nis highly relatable. Many people have played the underdog at least once in\ntheir lives, and it's tough not to cheer for the little guy.\n What are the twists you can put on the underdog? That's a good question,\nand one that is not easily answered.\n A lot of people like to blend the Underdog with other archetypes, the\nmost common of these being 'the Unlikely Hero' (below). While it's not\nthe most unique of paths to take, it is one example of a spin you could\nplay on the character.\n\nContinued... help CRY16\n\n16\n\n \/\\ \n _ )( _________________________________________________________ \n(_)\/\/\/\/\/\/\/(**)_________________________________________________________> \n )( \n Page 16 \\\/ Roleplaying with Fire - Alessio\n\n The Unlikely Hero\n The common soldier thrust into an epic quest to put an end to the evil\ntyrant's rule is one example of this archetype. Like the underdog, these\ncharacters commonly face insurmountable odds and overcome them to achieve\ntriumph.\n What makes this character type work is not that it's overly relatable,\nbut rather that it's a common fantasy that most people have to be one.\n One of the most interesting twists that could be applied to this\nparticular archetype is to make the character morally ambiguous. Perhaps\nbuild a question of morality into the running personality of the character.\nHave it hold one or more scruples that are uncommon with the usual reader,\nand you force other players -- and yourself -- to think about the character\nand his or her overall impact (positive or negative) on what happens.\n It also creates some uncertainty for the end game. How will the hero\nturn out? Who knows!\n\n The Crusader\n The crusader needs no explanation. Everything you need to know is in\nthe name of the archetype.\n By definition, a crusader is not inherently heroic or villainous, but\nrather is aligned in direct response to his or her cause. Most of the time,\nhowever, the crusader is labeled as heroic because most often his cause is\none of honor.\n A crusader appeals to use because of his unwavering code of honor and\n\nContinued... help CRY17\n\n17\n\n \/\\ \n _ )( _________________________________________________________ \n(_)\/\/\/\/\/\/\/(**)_________________________________________________________> \n )( \n Page 17 \\\/ Roleplaying with Fire - Alessio\n\nhis devotion to a specific cause. Whereas most people are incapable of\nsticking it out with a cause, through thick and thin, safety and peril,\nand so forth, the Crusader not only does this, but he or she does it\nwith style.\n One of the most interesting twists that a player can use on the\nCrusader is the possibility of shaken faith. Some of the greatest of\nthe archetype face challenges that almost cause them to lose their way;\nit is part of the persona. Use that to your advantage and you could be\nwell on your way.\n \n The Antihero\n Though the archetype was originated much earlier, the term antihero\nwas coined far later.\n Typically defined as a protagonist with untraditional and usually\nunheroic traits, the antihero is the rebel, or the scoundrel, or any\nnumber of other cliches. Instead of purposefully setting out to achieve\nsome grand, heroic goal, the antihero is commonly chancing upon the heroic\nsimply by doing something selfish.\n One of the best examples is the man who hunts down a maniacal tyrant\nfor revenge. He is not setting out to defeat the tyrant because he is\noppressing thousands of people, he is doing so because that man killed\nsomeone he loved. If the greater good and his ambitions just so happen\nto coincide, all the better.\n A great way to twist the antihero: perhaps consider making him worse\n\nContinued... help CRY18\n\n18\n\n \/\\ \n _ )( _________________________________________________________ \n(_)\/\/\/\/\/\/\/(**)_________________________________________________________> \n )( \n Page 18 \\\/ Roleplaying with Fire - Alessio\n\nthan the villain he's hunting. Not only will you draw people into your plot\nthis way, you'll likely also create fertile ground upon which to build\nfuture plots and roleplay.\n \n Conclusion\n This month, I looked at heroic archetypes and addressed some of the most\ncommon ones for my readers.
